THE ROLE OF THE ADVERTISING ARTS
Several different types of people are employed in advertising art.
Art directors are responsible for the visual presentation of the ad. They are normally involved along with a copywriter in developing the initial concept of the ad. They may do initial sketches, layouts, of what the ad may look like. Their primary responsibility is to supervise the ad’s progress to completion. The best art directors are good at presenting ideas both in words and pictures. They are usually graphic designers with broad experience and a good understanding of consumers. Moreover, they should be good managers of people: they may have a large and small staff under them depending on the organization or they may work free-lance. The way advertising materials are initially designed establishes the artistic direction and eventually determines the result.
Graphic designers are preoccupied with the shape and form of things. Their effort in advertising is to arrange various graphic elements in the most attractive and effective way possible. The artist who draws or paints the pictures we see in ads are called illustrators. They are so specialized that many frequently concentrate on just one type of illustrating. Fu
iture illustrators, for example, might draw a manufacturer’s sofa in pencil or water colours, paying great attention to the upholstery or wood veneer and showing it all off in a beautiful living room setting. Most advertising illustrators free-lance. Typically the agencies hire different illustrators for different jobs depending on the particular needs and the desired look and feel of the ad.
Production artists are responsible for assembling the various elements of an ad and mechanically putting them together the way the art director or designer has indicated. Good production artists are in fact, precise and knowledgeable about the whole production process. In addition, they have the...
