There is no such thing as happiness, for an unfulfilled wish causes pain, and attainment brings only satiety.
Schopenhauer (1788-1860)
Everyone wants to be happy and no one wants to suffer. We tend to look for happiness outside ourselves, thinking that if we had the right house, the right car, the right job, and the right friends we would be happy. We spend almost all our time adjusting the exte
al world, trying to make it conform to our wishes. We try to surround ourselves with people and things that make us feel comfortable, secure, or stimulated.
The concept of social character sometimes happens to be a key concept here. Human energy is shaped by the dynamic adaptation of human needs to the particular mode of existence of a given society. Our thoughts deal with adapted and so accepted ethical, philosophical, political, psychological or social problems. Thus, for instance, the idea of work and success as the main aims of life became powerful and appealing to a mode
man. The dominant drives in his personality lead him to do what is necessary and desirable under the specific social conditions of his culture. In fact, by adapting (from the very birth) himself to social conditions a man develops those traits that make him desire to act as he has to act.
This way we gain a passionate drive to save money or to spend money for any luxury or entertainment, etc. Therefore, in this approach, the needs and desires that centre about the individual’s relations to others, such as love, hatred, tende
ess, symbiosis, are the outstanding psychological phenomena. This means that psychological satisfaction occurs not only if a person acts in accordance with the demands springing from social directives, but also if he tries to realize his inner strivings.
In addition, one point of significant discrepancy should be mentioned. It conce
s the conflict between psychological phenomena of want and those of abundance. The primitive level of human existence is that of need (or want)....
