INTRODUCTION

The unique role of written language as a means of enabling students to formulate their thoughts to themselves, and to reflect on what they mean, is now widely recognized. Writing is seen as an integral part of the process of lea
ing, and not simply as an ancillary function – something to be used as a way of checking that lea
ing has actually taken place (as in the traditional subject essay). This view requires a more sophisticated account of the nature of the writing process than has traditionally been available - in particular, it requires an appreciation that writing is used for a wide range of purposes and a variety of audiences.
My graduation paper is devoted to the problems, which the majority of upper-intermediate students face when they deal with writing activities. Thus, the aim of my work is to study the basic principles of writing.
In the first chapter ”Writing process” I would like to concentrate on the process of writing in general, on reasons for teaching writing and on the basic elements of writing in particular. This chapter also deals with various types of writing, its purposes, and the basic principles of text construction.
In the second chapter ”Writing process at work” I shall confine my attention to the combination of process and genre at work and different stages of writing lessons such as the generation of ideas, the study of genres and the planning of the text. This chapter is also devoted to project work as it combines the stages mentioned above.
In the third chapter ”Writing feedback” different problems of organising writing activities in the classroom are discussed. This chapter also deals with teachers’ reaction to the students’ writing and the ways of correcting, responding and guiding to students’ works.
