The expression “American Slang” consists of two terms: ‘American’ and ‘slang’. To define it, first of all we are to look through the scientific tradition and to see the common opinions about the American language itself and about the slang. We’ll begin with the slang, because it is not so difficult to define. The concept of American language is so vague and unclear, that it would be better to define it later. Then, we’ll pass to the analysis of the peculiarities of the American slang with the examples.
The global reasons for the appearance of slang in the language lay in the sphere of laws of human behavior: some groups, if they want to separate themselves from the society, use slang among several other means, like the way of dressing, music, philosophy and so on. It is very natural for the young people. The specialists in etiology say that all human beings, when they are young, want to establish their authority by means of creating their own society, which is strongly opposite to the society of their parents.
