Roman Chatterton (1987) also refers to the biographies of real people suicidal poet Thomas Chatterton XVIII century, Victorian poet George Meredith, and the lines of their lives are intertwined with the story line fictional Charles Wychwood, the poet of the day.
Ackroyd projects at three different times, and the story of a lonely misunderstood poetic talent, forcing intertwined fates of the characters, and then SAON text of literary allusions and captivating the reader pseudo-detective searches. First of all, it is the pursuit of the lost old days, but the main theme of this search and serves as a constant question: what is reality and fiction, what is true and false? In connection with this theme crops up frequently in the art of plagiarism and falsification topic. Plagiarism on the contrary, when the artist ascribes own creation alien genius. Perhaps not everyone will agree with the conclusions that make the characters in the book.
As of this genre and requires pseudo-detective, the reader's expectations are deceived in the end, and the whole book has to rethink again, but that this must be sought and the author, clearly avoiding the final arrangement of dots the its and offering everyone to decide where the truth lies.
Chances are you have known the dramatic story of the poet - a suicide that cut his life thread on the threshold of adulthood, and the remainder of the century on a cute kid with an angelic face. Everything as always is simple - not recognized by the lines that exalt the name of a person after his death.
In the book, intertwined stories of three poets:
- Thomas Chatterton - the legendary poet of the XVIII century, became famous poems supposedly written by a medieval monk, Thomas Rowley - this is one of the most famous "frauds" in the world literature, which nevertheless brought glory Chatterton genius. Posthumous glory: the poet died at the age of seventeen (poisoned with arsenic).
- George Meredith - the poet of the Victorian era, he posed for a picture of "The Death of Chatterton," by Henry Wallace.
- Charles Wychwood - a fictional character, a poet who lives in our day. He finds a picture of a middle-aged Chatterton, and he starts to think that Chatterton faked his own death, and then wrote many more works of genius on behalf of other poets.
Subject authenticity, falsification and plagiarism - the main in the novel. All the characters are somehow connected with the world of art (literature, painting). Some - stealing scenes, others - is credited with their own creations to other people, and someone is trying to get to the authenticity. And in the book there is no unequivocal assessment.
