Chapter 1 – Introduction
1.1. Statement of the problem and objectives of research
MIS is an issue that has been studied for quite a long time, because much of what was discovered about MIS had changed with the changes in technology that is so prevalent in contemporary society. However, it is important to note that private and public companies are only small segments and that MIS are important in many other areas as well. Those specialists who are involved with MIS often know a lot about computers and also have knowledge in business sphere. As a result, with such a solid knowledge base these competent individuals are able to set up almost any kind of MIS for whatever type of business requests it, and for whatever they plan to do with it.
The key problem here is that there are so many different kinds of MIS that it becomes difficult to determine which one is right for a particular business. Those specialists who work in the field of MIS should know what a specific organisation needs based on what they will be doing with the system: how many people will be using it, what type of sensitive information may be on it, and other connected factors. This problem is great for any business, but it especially conce
s gove
mental organisations and public owned companies because there is often a great deal of sensitive and classified information that must be protected.
Certain individuals within the organisation may have access to certain parts of this information, while others may have access to different areas or more areas. Due to that the MIS which are set up for a gove
ment entity or public owned company is much different from those which are set up for a business where the access to certain areas is not such a conce
. How best to set up this kind of a system for a gove
ment entity and for a private company, as well as where technology should travel in the future to move forward with MIS, are the objectives of this research, as there has been little done on this particular...
Chapter 5 – Conclusion
5.1. Brief review of objectives
In the introductory chapter the author established the following objectives of the study:
1) Identify how best to set up management information system for a gove
ment entity and for a private company.
2) Define where technology should travel in the future to move forward with MIS.
Based on these objectives of the research the following hypothesis was formulated:
 Due to the considerable difficulties in technology which protects sensitive data from non-authorised access MIS in gove
mental organisations (such as public agencies) are more comprehensive and need longer time to be developed than those in private companies. As a result, these systems are often underutilised and managers do not listen to their employees’ (end users’) advice regarding MIS. That is why both public agencies and private companies should be studied in order to address the development of IT and MIS in particular.
5.2. Research conclusion
As a result of the study the hypothesis mentioned above appeared to be valid. It was discovered during primary research that MIS in public agencies are much more complicated and needs longer time to install than those in private companies. It was also found out that this complexity of MIS is caused by variety of mechanisms which are developed to protect sensitive data including secret information. The academic theory in literature review also supports these findings.
Another conclusion which can be drawn from primary data analysis is that MIS are often utilised incorrectly as a result of the problems of communication and collaboration between managers, IT specialists and end users of these systems. This problem exists because managers usually are not receptive to what their employees needs from MIS and also do not understand special terminology used by IT specialists who develop these systems. It can be resolved by establishing more informal atmosphere in the companies where employees are...
