AUTOMATIC STEERING BY MAGNETO COMPASS
In this method, the pilot sets the magneto compass to the correct magnetic bearing of the point toward which he desires to fly. This may be done whilst the aircraft is on the ground. After talking off, the aircraft is headed in the approximate direction of the objective and the pilot then puts the automatic system into action to take control of the rudder and steer the aircraft on the selected course.
The magneto compass is the heart of this system; as long as the aircraft is flying on the correct heading, no electrical current will be generated and consequently the apparatus will have nothing to do but hold the rudder in its central position. As soon as the aircraft starts to deviate from the heading, the magneto compass generates an electric current, the polarity of which depends upon whether the aircraft is off-headed to the right or to the left. This current operates a relay which energizes the appropriate magnet of the automatic pilot and through the servo motor corrects the rudder position to bring the aircraft back on its heading.
If a cross wind is blowing, the pilot must watch his landmarks and make corrections in the compass setting until he is following the desired flight path.
